King of My World

King of My World

Love and marriage in the age of mandatory overtime.

I’m calling to say that I’m working late,
And I don’t know when I’m getting home.
It’s a little more pay, and I’m bound to obey
That king on his corporate throne.
Give my love to the kids, as you put ’em to bed,
And you’re putting the toys on the shelf.
And if you’re still awake,
We’ll be making some love for ourselves.

Now, has anyone seen our American dream?
We started a little too late.
The party had died by the time we arrived.
They were already locking the gate.
The harder we race, just to stay in our place,
The farther we’re falling behind.
I’d give up a piece
Of the pie for the peace of my mind.

And my decree
Would be time to be free,
Just being a boy and a girl.
I’d be pulling the strings
If I were the king of my world,
King of my world.

Now our garden is green, and our credit is clean,
And I know that I shouldn’t complain,
When many a friend’s at the deadest of ends,
And washing their dreams down the drain.
But how long can we stand in a castle of sand,
And pretend to be wearing a crown?
Till the break of a wave
Sends us tumbling down to the ground.

And my decree
Would be time to be free,
Just being a boy and a girl.
We’d be having a fling
If I were the king of my world.
Just me and my queen,
If I were the king of my world.
King of my world.
